Action: Boosts qì and resolves the exterior; harmonizes the stomach and transforms phlegm.
Indication: External contraction of wind-cold with internal phlegm-rheum, characterized by aversion to cold, heat effusion, headache, nasal congestion, cough with copious phlegm, fullness and oppression in the chest and diaphragm. Tongue fur: Thin and white. Pulse: Weak and floating.
Category: Exterior-resolving formulas / Right-supporting exterior-resolving formulas
Method: Decoct with water and drink cold.
Rationale: Zǐ sū yè is warm, acrid, and aromatic; it can effuse the exterior and disperse cold and can rectify qì and harmonize the stomach. Hence, it is the sovereign agent in the formula. A small amount of Rén shēn —or Dǎng shēn— boosts qì, helping to resolve the exterior. Qián hú,
