Category: Astringing formulas / Flooding and vaginal discharge formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Shān yào and Qiàn shí fortify the spleen and percolate damp as well as astringing essence and checking discharge. Hence, they are used in large quantities as the sovereign agents. Huáng bǎi and Chē qián zǐ clear heat and disinhibit dampness, making the damp-heat pass out in the urine. Opposite and complementary to these two agents, Bái guǒ nut has a constraining action that checks vaginal discharge.
Notes: Transforming Yellow
in the formula name can be interpreted as a eliminating yellow vaginal discharge, or fortifying the spleen (the organ associated with the color yellow in five-phase theory).
