Thoroughfare-Securing Decoction
固冲汤 〔固衝湯〕gù chōng tāng

Ingredients:
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) (stir–fried) 30g
- Shēng huáng qí (生黄芪 Astragali Radix Cruda, raw astragalus [root]) 18g
- Lóng gǔ (龙骨 Mastodi Ossis Fossilia, dragon bone) (calcined) 24g
- Mǔ lì (牡蛎 Ostreae Concha, oyster shell) (calcined) 24g
- Shān yú ròu (山萸肉 Corni Fructus, cornus [fruit]) 24g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 12g
- Hǎi piāo xiāo (海螵蛸 Sepiae Endoconcha, cuttlefish bone) 12g
- Qiàn cǎo (茜草 Rubiae Radix, madder [root]) 9g
- Zōng lǘ tàn (棕榈炭 Trachycarpi Petiolus Carbonisatus, charred trachycarpus [petiole]) 6g
- Wǔ bèi zǐ (五倍子 Galla Chinensis, sumac gallnut) 1.5g
Action: Boosts qì and fortifies the spleen; secures the thoroughfare vessel and contains the blood.
Indication: Flooding and spotting or heavy periods with pale, thin flow, heart palpitation, and shortness of breath. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Large and vacuous or fine and weak.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: The sovereign agents are Huáng qí and Bái zhú, which address the root of the disorder. Huáng qí supplements qì and contains the blood. With Bái zhú, fortifies the spleen and boosts qì so as to secure the thoroughfare vessel. The minister agents are Bái sháo and Shān zhū yú, which nourish the liver. Shān zhū yú in particular also supplements the kidney, and being sour and astringent, prevents desertion resulting from heavy bleeding (hence the large dose).
