Land and Water Two Immortals Elixir
水陆二仙丹 〔水陸二仙丹〕shuǐ lù èr xiān dān
Source: Zhèng Zhì Zhǔn Shéng 证治准绳
Alternate Chinese names:
Ingredients:
- Qiàn shí (芡实 Euryales Semen, euryale [seed]) 50g
- Jīn yīng zǐ (金樱子 Rosae Laevigatae Fructus, Cherokee rose fruit) 500g
Action: Supplements the kidney, secures essence, and checks vaginal discharge.
Indication: Kidney vacuity with seminal emission or seminal efflux in men, and vacuity vaginal discharge in women.
Category: Astringing formulas / essence-astringing essence enuresis-checking
Rationale: Qiàn shí supplements the spleen and kidney, and checks emission and discharge. Jīn yīng zǐ astringes and secures. Seminal emission occurs in both repletion and vacuity patterns. Dream emission (ejaculation associated with erotic dreams) is attributed to exuberance of the ministerial fire, while emission unassociated with dreaming usually occurs when the kidney is vacuous and the essence gate is insecure.
Repletion patterns are treated by enriching yīn and downbearing fire with a formula such as Zhī bǎi dì huáng wán (知柏地黄丸 Anemarrhena, Phellodendron, and Rehmannia Pill)or Fēng suǐ dān (封髓丹 Marrow-Sealing Elixir). Pure vacuity patterns should be treated with Shuǐ lù èr xiān dān (水陆二仙丹 Land and Water Two Immortals Elixir)or Jīn suǒ gù jīng wán (金锁固精丸 Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill).
Notes: The words l and water
in the title are probably explained by the fact that the formula supplements spleen-earth and kidney-water.
Similar: Jīn suǒ gù jīng wán (金锁固精丸 Golden Lock Essence-Securing Pill)
