Toxin-Vanquishing Powder

败毒散 〔敗毒散〕bài dú sǎn

Ingredients:

Action: Boosts qi and resolves the exterior; disperses wind and dispels dampness.

Indication: Contraction of wind-cold-damp in qì vacuity patients with abhorrence of cold and vigorous heat effusion, absence of sweating, headache and stiff neck, aching limbs, nasal congestion, heavy voice, cough with phlegm, glomus and fullness in the chest and diaphragm. Tongue fur: white and slimy. Pulse floating and soggy or floating, rapid, and forceless at the deep level.

Method: Grind to a power (15g gancao with 30g of each of the other items) or decoct with water using the weights given above.

Rationale: Qiāng huó and Dú huó effuse and disperse wind-cold, as well as eliminating dampness and relieving pain. Qiāng huó ascends while Dú huó descends, thereby treating wind-damp in any part of the body. A small quantity of Rén shēn or Dǎng shēn combined with Chái hú, Chuān xiōng, Shēng jiāng, and Bò hé boosts qì and resolves the exterior, making the evil discharge with the sweat. Small amounts of Fú líng with Qián hú, zhike, and Jié gěng is used to transform phlegm and relieve cough. Gān cǎo harmonizes all the agents in the formula. The formula unites supplementing agents and exterior-resolving agents, with the emphasis on the latter.
