Ingredients:

• Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 20g
• Shān yào (山药 Dioscoreae Rhizoma, dioscorea [root]) 10g
• Shān zhū yú (山茱萸 Corni Fructus, cornus [fruit]) 10g
• Qǐ zǐ (杞子 Lycii Fructus, lycium [berry]) 10g
• Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 6g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 3g

Action: Supplements the liver and kidney; boosts essence-blood.

Indication: Lumbar pain, seminal emission, night sweating, dry throat, dizzy head and dizzy vision: Tongue: Red and smooth. Pulse: Fine and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Like Liù wèi dì huáng wán (六味地黄丸 Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill)on which it is based, this formula treats yīn vacuity. It includes the three supplements of Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill: Shú dì huáng to supplement kidney essence, Shān zhū yú to enrich liver yīn, and Shān yào to enrich spleen yīn. However, since it addresses yīn vacuity without effulgent fire, the heat-clearing fire-draining agents Mǔ dān pí and Zé xiè are omitted. Gǒu qǐ zǐ is added to help the Shú dì huáng supplement yīn-blood, and small amount of Fú líng and Zhì gān cǎo help the root of later heaven (spleen-stomach) to nourish the root of earlier heaven (kidney).
