Category: Supplementing formulas / Dual qì-blood dual supplementation formula
Method: The Rock of Tàishān
(Tàishān is a mountain in Shāndōng) symbolizes firmness.
Rationale: This formula is basically Bā zhēn tāng (八珍汤 Eight-Gem Decoction) minus Fú líng, and plus Huáng qí, Xù duàn, Shā rén, and glutinous rice. Bā zhēn tāng boosts qì and nourishes the blood to protect the fetus. In this formula, Fú líng is removed out of fear that its water-disinhibiting action might abort the fetus. Huáng qí works with glutinous rice to boost qì. Xù duàn and Shā rén secure the kidney. All four of these agents quiet the fetus. A small quantity of Huáng qín combined with Bái zhú addresses the heat.
Variations:
- Concurrent
heart palpitation andinsomnia : Add Suān zǎo rén (酸枣仁 Ziziphi Spinosi Semen, spiny jujube [kernel]) and Lóng yǎn ròu (龙眼肉 Longan Arillus, longan flesh). - Severe
lumbar pain : Add Dù zhòng (杜仲 Eucommiae Cortex, eucommia [bark]) and Tù sī zǐ (菟丝子 Cuscutae Semen, cuscuta [seed]). - Absence of heat signs: Omit Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]).
- Weak stomach and
reduced eating : Increase the Shā rén (砂仁 Amomi Fructus, amomum [fruit]) and reduce the Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]). - Signs of impending
miscarriage such as bleeding: Add ē jiāo (阿胶 Asini Corii Colla, ass hide glue) and ài yè (艾叶 Artemisiae Argyi Folium, mugwort [leaf]).
Notes: This is a variant of Bā zhēn tāng (八珍汤 Eight-Gem Decoction).
