Source: Yán Shì Xiǎo ér Fāng Lùn 阎氏小儿方论

Ingredients:

• Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root]) 3–9g
• Gé gēn (葛根 Puerariae Radix, pueraria [root]) 9–12g
• Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 6–9g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 3–5g

Action: Resolves the flesh and outthrusts papules.

Indication: Measles papules failing to erupt or erupting poorly, with generalized heat effusion, thirst, and headache. Tongue: Red with dry fur. Pulse: Floating and rapid.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Shēng má and Gé gēn together resolve lung-stomach heat toxin and can resolve the flesh and outthrust papules. Chì sháo cools the and quickens the blood, thus clearing heat toxin in the network vessels. Gān cǎo combined with Shēng má promotes upbearing and effusion and resolves toxin. These agents together help to outthrust papules without any danger of damaging yīn.

Variations:

• Initial-stage measles: Add Bò hé (薄荷 Menthae Herba, mint), Jīng jiè (荆芥 Schizonepetae Herba, schizonepeta), Chán tuì (蝉蜕 Cicadae Periostracum, cicada molting), Niú bàng zǐ (牛蒡子 Arctii Fructus, arctium [seed]), and Jīn yín huā (金银花 Lonicerae Flos, lonicera [flower]).
• Sore throat: Add Jié gěng (桔梗 Platycodonis Radix, platycodon [root]), Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]), and Mǎ bó (马勃 Lasiosphaera seu Calvatia , puffball).
• Incomplete eruption of measles with bright red papules: Use Chì sháo (赤芍 Paeoniae Radix Rubra, red peony [root]) and add Xuán shēn (玄参 Scrophulariae Radix, scrophularia [root]), Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]), Zǐ cǎo (紫草 Arnebiae/Lithospermi Radix, arnebia/lithospermum), and Dà qīng yè (大青叶 Isatidis Folium, isatis leaf).
• Itching: Add Hé shǒu wū (何首乌 Polygoni Multiflori Radix, flowery knotweed [root]) and Jí lí (蒺藜 Tribuli Fructus, tribulus [fruit]).
• Severe cough cough after outthrust of measles can be treated by adding Sāng bái pí (桑白皮 Mori Cortex, mulberry bark), Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]), Bèi mǔ (贝母 Fritillariae Bulbus, fritillaria [bulb]), and Cè bǎi yè (侧柏叶 Platycladi Cacumen, arborvitae leaf).
