Ginseng Provisioning-Nourishing Decoction (Pill)

人参养荣汤(丸) 〔人參養榮湯(丸)〕rén shēn yǎng róng tāng (wán)

Source: Hé Jì Jú Fāng 和剂局方

Ingredients:

Action: Boosts qì and supplements the blood; nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit.

Indication: Qì-blood vacuity or heart-spleen vacuity characterized by lassitude of spirit and lack of strength, fright palpitation, and insomnia. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Fine and weak.

Category: Supplementing formulas / Dual qì-blood dual supplementation formula

Method: Decoct with water. Can also be made into pills.

Rationale: This formula is Bā zhēn tāng (八珍汤 Eight-Gem Decoction) minus Chuān xiōng, and plus Huáng qí, Ròu guì, Chén pí, Wǔ wèi zǐ, and Yuǎn zhì root. The Chuān xiōng is omitted because its blood-quickening qualities are not wanted. Huáng qí is added to combine with Dāng guī to supplement qì and engender blood. Ròu guì works with ginger and Dà zǎos to the same effect. Yuǎn zhì and Wǔ wèi zǐ with Dǎng shēn and Fú líng boosts heart qì and quiets the spirit. Chén pí rectifies qì and harmonizes the stomach, preventing the other agents in the formula from causing accumulation and stagnation. The pill form is also prescribed for delayed menstruation due to blood vacuity.

Notes: Variant of bazhensan.
