Category: Supplementing formulas / Yīn-yáng dual supplementation formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dāng guī is warm, sweet, and acrid. It not only supplements the blood and harmonizes the liver but also disperses cold and relieves pain. For this reason, it is the sovereign agent in this formula. Shēng jiāng warms the center and disperses cold, while also helping the Dāng guī to engender qì and blood. Mutton (goat's meat is more commonly used in China, but is barely available in the West) not only supplements vacuity and harmonizes the center cut also helps to moderate the acridity and dryness of the two other agents and prevent them from damaging yīn-blood.
