Heart-Nourishing Decoction
养心汤 〔養心湯〕yǎng xīn tāng

Ingredients:
- Dǎng shēn (党参 Codonopsis Radix, codonopsis [root]) 9–12g
- Huáng qí (黄芪 Astragali Radix, astragalus [root]) 9–12g
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 9–12g
- Fú shén (茯神 Poria cum Pini Radice , root poria) 9–12g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 9–12g
- Ròu guì (肉桂 Cinnamomi Cortex, cinnamon bark) 2–3g
- Bǎi zǐ rén (柏子仁 Platycladi Semen, arborvitae seed) 9–12g
- Zǎo rén (枣仁 Ziziphi Spinosi Semen, spiny jujube [kernel]) 9–12g
- Yuǎn zhì (远志 Polygalae Radix, polygala [root]) 6–9g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3g
- Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]) 3–6g
- Bàn xià (半夏 Pinelliae Rhizoma, pinellia [rhizome]) 6–9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3–6g
Action: Boosts qì and supplements the blood; nourishes the heart and quiets the spirit.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Huáng qí, Dǎng shēn (or Rén shēn), and Gān cǎo supplement qì, while Dāng guī and Chuān xiōng nourish the blood. Fú líng, Fú shén, Suān zǎo rén, Bǎi zǐ rén, and Yuǎn zhì quiet the heart spirit. Wǔ wèi zǐ constrains heart yīn, while Bàn xià works with Yuǎn zhì to eliminate any phlegm harassing the heart. Ròu guì warms and moves the blood vessels, as well as conducting the fire back to its source.
