Liver-Supplementing Decoction
补肝汤 〔補肝湯〕bǔ gān tāng

Ingredients:
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 6–12g
- Shú dì huáng (熟地黄 Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, cooked rehmannia [root]) 9–15g
- Bái sháo (白芍 Paeoniae Radix Alba, white peony [root]) 6–12g
- Chuān xiōng (川芎 Chuanxiong Rhizoma, chuanxiong [rhizome]) 3–6g
- Suān zǎo rén (酸枣仁 Ziziphi Spinosi Semen, spiny jujube [kernel]) 6–9g
- Mù guā (木瓜 Chaenomelis Fructus, chaenomeles [fruit]) 6–9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 3–6g
Action: Nourishes the blood and supplements the liver.
Indication: Insufficiency of liver blood with signs such as dizziness,

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dāng guī, Shú dì huáng, Bái sháo, and Chuān xiōng are called the four agents.
They nourish the blood and supplement the liver, as well as quickening the blood and regulating menstruation. Suān zǎo rén kernel nourishes the yīn blood, boosts the heart and kidney, and quiets the heart spirit. Mù guā soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels, while Gān cǎo supplements qì and harmonizes the center.
Notes: This is a variant of Sì wù tāng (四物汤 Four Agents Decoction).
