Ingredients:

• Gé jiè (蛤蚧 Gecko , gecko) 2 pieces
• Xìng rén (杏仁 Armeniacae Semen, apricot kernel) 150g
• Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix-fried) 150g
• Rén shēn (人参 Ginseng Radix, ginseng) 60g
• Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 60g
• Bèi mǔ (贝母 Fritillariae Bulbus, fritillaria [bulb]) 60g
• Sāng bái pí (桑白皮 Mori Cortex, mulberry bark) 60g
• Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 60g

Action: Supplements qì and clears the lung; relieves cough and calms panting.

Indication: Cough due to enduring illness, qì ascent with panting and fullness, coughing of pus and blood, heat vexation in the chest, and marked emaciation.

Rationale: Gé jiè supplements lung qì, calms panting, and relieves cough. Rén shēn greatly supplements original qì. Fú líng and Gān cǎo harmonize the center and fortify the spleen. Xìng rén and Bèi mǔ transform phlegm and precipitate qì. Zhī mǔ and Sāng bái pí clear and drain lung heat. Rén shēn and Gé jiè make such an effective combination that they are often used alone. This combination is called Shēn jiè sǎn (参蚧散 Ginseng with Gecko PowderCHECK THIS SHENGESAN, RENSHENGEJIE). ALSOSHENGESAN

Variations:

• Panting from lung-kidney vacuity and the kidney failing to absorb qì: Add Hé táo rén (核桃仁 Juglandis Semen, walnut [kernel]) and Wǔ wèi zǐ (五味子 Schisandrae Fructus, schisandra [berry]).
• Pronounced cough and panting: Use heixidan first to calm panting, and then use this formula.
• Severe cough: Add Zǐ wǎn (紫菀 Asteris Radix, aster [root]) and Kuǎn dōng huā (款冬花 Farfarae Flos, coltsfoot).
• Copious phlegm-drool: Add Tiān zhú huáng (天竺黄 Bambusae Concretio Silicea%#%, bamboo sugar) and Dǎn xīng (胆南星 Arisaema cum Bile , bile [-processed] arisaema [root]).
• Pulmonary tuberculosis: Add Sān qī (三七 Notoginseng Radix, notoginseng [root]), Bái máo gēn (白茅根 Imperatae Rhizoma, imperata [rhizome]), and Bái jí (白及 Bletillae Rhizoma, bletilla [root]).
• Generalized heat effusion and heart vexation: Add Zhī zǐ (栀子 Gardeniae Fructus, gardenia [fruit]) and Mǔ dān pí (牡丹皮 Moutan Cortex, moutan [bark]).
