Yáng-Upbearing Stomach-Boosting Decoction

升阳益胃汤 〔升陽益胃湯〕shēng yáng yì wèi tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Supplements qì and fortifies the spleen; upbears yáng and boosts the stomach.

Indication: Spleen-stomach vacuity characterized by generalized heaviness and aching, lassitude of spirit, hypersomnia, no thought of food and drink, inability to taste food, aversion to cold, bitter taste in the mouth, dry tongue, and frequent urination. Tongue fur: White and glossy. Pulse: Moderate and soggy.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Rén shēn, Bái zhú, Fú líng, Gān cǎo, Chén pí, Bàn xià and Huáng qí supplement the center and boost qì, as well as fortifying the spleen and drying dampness. Huáng qí in particular greatly supplements the lung and spleen, banking earth to engender metal. Thus, it has the effect of supplementing qì and boosting defense. Chái hú, Fáng fēng, Qiāng huó, and Dú huó combined with Huáng qí upbear and effuse yáng qì and dispel wind-damp. Zé xiè and Fú líng are a bland-sweet damp-percolating combination that addresses the frequent urination due to spleen dampness. Huáng lián is a bitter agent that fortifies the stomach and strengthens the intestines. Ginger and Dà zǎo harmonize provisioning and defense.
