Origin-Lifting Brew

举元煎 〔舉元煎〕jǔ yuán jiān

Ingredients:

Action: Boosts qì and promotes uplift.

Indication: Qì vacuity fall causing extended menstruation, heavy flow that is pale and watery, together with bright white facial complexion, shortness of breath, and laziness to speak. Tongue: Pale. Pulse: Vacuous. Also flooding and spotting unassociated with menstruation when due to qì fall.

Rationale: Huáng qí supplements center qì and raises fallen yáng qì. Rén shēn, Bái zhú, and Gān cǎo fortify the spleen and boost qì, strengthening the source of engendering transformation of qì and blood. When qì is exuberant, it contains the blood. Shēng má helps the Huáng qí to upbear clear yáng qì. This formula is in actually a variant of Bǔ zhōng yì qì tāng (补中益气汤 Center-Supplementing Qì-Boosting Decoction), which was originally designed for qì vacuity with heat effusion and sweating. In this formula, the Chái hú, Dāng guī, and Chén pí are omitted because their acrid dispersing qualities can stir the blood.
