Spleen-Effusing Decoction Plus White Atractylodes
越婢加朮汤 〔越婢加朮湯〕yuè bì jiā zhú tāng

Ingredients:
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) 18g
- Shí gāo (石膏 Gypsum Fibrosum, gypsum) 48g
- Shēng jiāng (生姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens, fresh ginger) 9g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) 6g
- Dà zǎo (大枣 Jujubae Fructus, jujube) 15 pieces
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 12g
Action: Expels water and rheum; disinhibits urine.
Indication: Repletion pattern of generalized swelling, or swelling around the eyes, and inhibited urine.

Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Má huáng, the sovereign agent, effuses sweat and resolves the exterior, as well as diffusing the lung and disinhibiting water. It makes resolve the exterior evil through sweating and allows accumulated water to pass out in the urine by its action of diffusing the lung and regulating the waterways. Shēng jiāng opens the stomach and disperses water. Bái zhú disinhibits water and frees the waterways, allowing the water evil out through the bladder.
