Saposhnikovia Sage-Inspired Powder

防风通圣散 〔防風通聖散〕fáng fēng tōng shèng sǎn

Ingredients:

Action: Resolves the exterior and frees the interior; courses wind and clears heat.

Indication: Exuberant wind-heat forming a pattern of interior and exterior repletion. Signs: generalized heat effusion, abhorrence of cold, headache, dry throat, constipation and reddish urine, itchy skin and eczema. Tongue: Red with white or yellow fur. Pulse: Rapid, floating, and slippery. Also used to treat yellow-water sores and other sores caused by wind dampness, and heat.

Method: Grind to a powder.

Dosage: 3g 2–3 times a day, decocted with three slices of ginger. Can also be made as pills or decoction.

Rationale: Fáng fēng, Jīng jiè suì, Má huáng, Shēng jiāng, and Bò hé course wind and resolve the exterior; they sweat the evil out of the body. Dà huáng and Máng xiāo precipitate the interior heat, while Zhī zǐ and Huá shí clear heat and disinhibit water. Thus, these four agents make the heat pass out in the stool and urine. Dāng guī, Chuān xiōng, and Bái sháo nourish the blood, thereby helping to expel wind. Bái zhú and Gān cǎo fortify the spleen and harmonizes the stomach, Thus, ensuring that sweating does not damage the exterior, and that precipitation does not damage the interior. The formula as a whole resolve the exterior, clears heat, precipitates, and supplements all at the same time.
