Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction
麻黄升麻汤 〔麻黃升麻湯〕má huáng shēng má tāng

Ingredients:
- Má huáng (麻黄 Ephedrae Herba, ephedra) (remove nodes) 7.5g
- Shēng má (升麻 Cimicifugae Rhizoma, cimicifuga [root]) 3.5gr
- Dāng guī (当归 Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Chinese angelica) 3.5g
- Zhī mǔ (知母 Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, anemarrhena [root]) 2.5g
- Huáng qín (黄芩 Scutellariae Radix, scutellaria [root]) 2.5g
- Wěi ruí (萎蕤 Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, Solomon's seal [root]) (or in one version Chāng pú (菖蒲 Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, acorus [root]) ) 3g
- Sháo yào (芍药 Paeoniae Radix, peony [root]) 2gr
- Tiān dōng (天冬 Asparagi Radix, asparagus [root]) (remove core) 2gr
- Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) (remove bark) 2g
- Fú líng (茯苓 Poria , poria) 2g
- Gān cǎo (甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix, licorice [root]) (mix–fried) 2g
- Shí gāo (石膏 Gypsum Fibrosum, gypsum) (crush and wrap in cotton bag) 3gr
- Bái zhú (白朮 Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, white atractylodes [root]) 2g
- Gān jiāng (干姜 Zingiberis Rhizoma, dried ginger) 2g
Action: Clears the upper body and warms the lower body.
Indication: The condition described in the Shāng Hán Lùn (Reverting Yīn, line 357) as follows: When in cold damage that has lasted six or seven days, after great precipitation, the inch pulse is sunken and slow, there is reverse-flow of the extremities, the lower portion of the pulse fails to arrive normally, the throat is inhibited, there is spitting of pus and blood, and incessant diarrhea, this is difficult to treat.
