Cinnamon Twig and Licorice Decoction
桂枝甘草汤 〔桂枝甘草湯〕guì zhī gān cǎo tāng
Source: Shāng Hán Lùn 伤寒论
Ingredients:
- Guì zhī (桂枝 Cinnamomi Ramulus, cinnamon twig) 12g
- Zhì gān cǎo (炙甘草 Glycyrrhizae Radix cum Mele Preparatum, mix-fried licorice [root]) 6g
Action: Warms and frees heart yáng.
Indication: Excessive promotion of sweating causing
Category: Interior-warming formulas / Channel-warming cold-dispersing formulas
Method: Decoct with water and take in a single dose.
Rationale: Guì zhī enters the heart; being acrid and warming it frees yang. Zhì gān cǎo is sweet and warm; it boosts qì and supplements the center. The two combined warm and free heart yáng to reduce heart palpitation.
