Action: Warms the center and supplements vacuity; downbears counterflow and relieves pain.
Indication: Center burner vacuity cold with acute pain in the stomach duct and abdomen, exacerbated by the slightest touch, retching and inability to take food or drink, and, in some cases, gurgling in the abdomen. Tongue: Pale with slimy fur. Pulse: Stringlike and slow or sunken and fine.
Category: Interior-warming formulas / Center-warming cold-dispersing formula
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Huā jiāo and Gān jiāng are acrid and hot. They warm the center and disperse cold, as well as downbearing counterflow and relieving pain. Rén shēn supplements the spleen and stomach, and supports right qì. Yí táng fortifies the spleen and relaxes tension, as well as counterbalancing the harsh acridity of the Huā jiāo and Gān jiāng. Since Huā jiāo also quiets roundworm, it can also be used to treat roundworm patients suffering from acute abdominal pain.
