Summerheat-Clearing Qì-Boosting Decoction [2]

清暑益气汤[2] 〔清暑益氣湯[2]〕qīng shǔ yì qì tāng

Ingredients:

Action: Clears summerheat and boosts qì; fortifies the spleen and safeguards the lung.

Indication: Contraction of summerheat-damp in patients usually suffering from qì vacuity. Signs include generalized heat effusion, headache, thirst, spontaneous sweating, fatigued cumbersome limbs, no thought of food and drink, fullness in the chest, generalized heaviness, thin sloppy stool, and short voidings of reddish urine. Pulse: Soft and vacuous pulse. Tongue fur: Thin and slimy.

Method: Decoct with water.

Rationale: Rén shēn —or Dǎng shēn—, Huáng qí, and Gān cǎo boost qì and secure the exterior, thereby supporting right and constraining sweat. Bái zhú and Cāng zhú fortify the spleen and dry dampness, while Zé xiè disinhibits water and percolates dampness. Mài dōng and Wǔ wèi zǐ safeguard the lung and engender liquid, while Dà huáng drains fire, thereby preserving yīn. Dāng guī supplements the blood, helping to harmonize yīn. Shēng má and Gé gēn effuse exterior heat, and uplift clear qì. Qīng pí and Chén pí regulate qì dynamic, while Shén qū harmonizes the stomach and disperses food.
