Action: Drains fire and enriches yīn; secures the exterior and checks sweating.
Indication:
Category: Heat-clearing formulas / Vacuity-heat-clearing formulas
Method: Decoct with water.
Rationale: Dāng guī, and raw and Shú dì huáng nourish the blood and increase humor. Huáng lián, Huáng qín, and Huáng bǎi clear heat and drain fire. Although Dāng guī and Shú dì huáng are sweet and warm, when combined with Huáng lián and Huáng qín they do not foster the evil heat. Although Huáng lián and Huáng qín are cold and bitter, when combined with Dāng guī and Shēng dì huáng they, they drain fire without damaging right qì. Hence these agents are mutually complementary. Huáng qí combined with Dāng guī has the effect of supplementing qì and engendering blood, but its use in this formula is to secure the exterior and check sweating.
