Counterflow liver qì

肝气逆 〔肝氣逆〕gān qì nì

Also liver qì ascending counterflow (counterflow ascent of liver qì). Any abnormal movement of liver qì, resulting from excessive free coursing or deficient free coursing. Counterflow liver qì most commonly manifests in ascendant hyperactivity of liver yáng liver qì invading the spleen, liver qì invading the stomach. Upsurge of liver qì characterized by dizziness, headache, red facial complexion, tinnitus, deafness, pain and fullness in the chest and rib-side. The pulse is stringlike and forceful. If the spleen is affected, there is distension and pain in the stomach duct and abdomen. If the stomach is affected, belching, acid swallowing, and, in severe cases, retching of blood are observed.

It can also affect the lung, giving rise to panting. It can also descend counterflow to cause swelling of the testicles or qì pain.
