When cold prevails, there is swelling

寒胜则浮 〔寒勝則浮〕 hán shèng zé fú

From Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, yīn yáng yìn xiàng dà lùn). When cold prevails, yáng qì is insufficient. Congealing cold with stagnant qì affect the movement of blood and water-damp collects. The swelling associated in Western medicine with chronic nephritis is usually a pattern of cold qì and spleen-kidney yáng vacuity.
