Sweating brow
额汗 〔額汗〕é hàn
Sweating only from the brow; most commonly seen in yáng brightness (yáng míng) patterns with concurrent static blood and damp-heat. When heat lies depressed in the inner body and fails to discharge by effusion, it follows the channel upward. The sweating stops when heat abates. After major illness or in elderly patients suffering from panting, counterflow ascent of qì can also give rise to copious sweating of the brow. In such cases, it is a vacuity sign. In advanced stages of major disease with lassitude of spirit and cold limbs, diarrhea, and a faint fine pulse, the sudden appearance of a sweating brow is a critical sign of over-ascending yáng with yīn failing to hold onto yáng and yīn humor deserting with qì.
