Seven mountings

七疝 〔七疝〕qī shàn

Seven different forms of mounting. The phrase first appears in Plain Questions (素问 sù wèn, gǔ kōng lùn) where it says: In disease of the controlling vessel (rèn mài), there is, in men, internal binding [to form] the seven mounting and, in women, [diseases] under the girdle, conglomerations, and gatherings. However, the text does not say what the seven mountings are. The term appeared in later texts, with different definitions.

  1. The Origin and Indicators of Disease (诸病源候论 zhū bìng yuán hòu lùn): reverting mounting, concretion mounting, cold mounting, qì mounting, winding mounting, bowel mounting, wolf mounting.
  2. Confucian Filiality (儒门事亲 rú mén shì qīn): cold mounting, water mouting, sinew mounting, blood mounting, qì mounting, foxlike mounting, downfall mounting.
  3. Indispensable Medical Reading (医宗必读 yī zōng bì dú): surging mounting, foxlike mounting, downfall mounting, reversal mounting, conglomeration mounting, slumping mounting, slumping-dribbling mounting.
