Also needle twirling. A needle manipulation technique whereby, after insertion, the needle is turned in alternating directions by rubbing it between the thumb and index finger. Needle rotation is used during needle insertion and withdrawal to facilitate the vertical movement of the needle, and otherwise to provide supplementation or drainage.
