Lifting and thrusting supplementation and drainage

提插补泻 〔提插補瀉〕tí chā bǔ xiè

A method of achieving supplementation and drainage that involves varying the emphasis on lifting the needle (retracting without extracting) and re-thrusting the needle after insertion. Emphasis on thrusting supplements, whereas emphasis on lifting drains. In other words, vigorous thrusts followed by gentle lifts have a supplementing effect, whereas vigorous lifts followed by gentle thrusts have a draining effect. See needle manipulation (technique); lifting and thrusting; heaven, human, and earth supplementation and drainage.
