Extreme heat engendering cold
热极生寒 〔熱極生寒〕rè jí shēng hán
Transmutation of heat into cold. Heat is yáng, whereas cold is yīn. Since yīn and yáng are mutually transmutable, heat can give way to cold, as the heat of summer gives way to the cold of winter. In the body, damage to yīn by extreme heat can cause yáng desertion characterized by counterflow cold of the limbs with great sweating, and a faint pulse on the verge of expiration. Similarly, heat lying deep in the body can cause severe heat and severe reversal.
