SP-18 Celestial Ravine

天溪 〔天谿〕 tiān xī

Channel: SP, foot greater yīn (tài yīn) spleen channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the chest, in the fourth intercostal space, 6 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: In a depression one cùn and six fēn below Chest Village (SP-19), six cùn from the midline of the chest. The point is located in supine posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Branches of the lateral thoracic artery and vein, the thoracoepigastric artery and vein, the 4th intercostal artery and vein. The lateral cutaneous branch of the 4th intercostal nerve.

Action: Loosens the chest and rectifies qì; downbears counterflow and suppresses cough.

Modern indications: Distension and pain in the chest; cough; mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng); scant breast milk.

Classical indications: Cough and counterflow qì ascent; throat rale.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.4‒0.5 cùn outward oblique insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 5‒20 min.

Point name meaning:

The area above the diaphragm is often referred to as heaven, (tiān), (see SP-8). The ideograph () refers to the cleft formed by the ribs and sinews that contain this point.
