SP-16 Abdominal Lament

腹哀 〔腹哀〕 fù āi

Alternate names: 肠哀 cháng āi, Intestinal Lament; 肠屈 cháng qū, Intestinal Bend

Channel: SP, foot greater yīn (tài yīn) spleen channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper abdomen, 3 cùn superior to SP-15 and 4 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: One cùn and five fēn below Sun and Moon (GB-24), four and a half cùn from the midline. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The 8th intercostal artery and vein. The 8th intercostal nerve.

Action: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness; frees bowel qì.

Modern indications: Abdominal pain; indigestion; constipation; dysentery.

Classical indications: Abdominal cold pain; pain in the umbilical region; dysentery with the pus and blood.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the spleen channel and yīn linking vessel (yīn wéi mài).
