SP-15 Great Horizontal

大横 〔大橫〕 dà héng

Alternate names: 人横 rén héng, Human’s Horizontal; 肾气 shèn qì, Kidney Qi

Channel: SP, foot greater yīn (tài yīn) spleen channel; shared point on the yīn linking (yīn wéi) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the abdomen, 4 cùn lateral to the center of the umbilicus.

Classical location: Three cùn and five fēn below Abdominal Lament (SP-16), four and a half cùn from the midline of the abdomen. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The 10th intercostal artery and vein. The 10th intercostal nerve.

Action: Boosts qì and disperses water; frees bowel qì.

Modern indications: Diarrhea; constipation; abdominal pain.

Classical indications: Great wind contraction with counterflow qì; dysentery; throughflux diarrhea (dòng xiè); cold pain in the smaller abdomen; central burner vacuity cold; heat in the smaller abdomen.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 10‒30 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the spleen channel and yīn linking vessel (yīn wéi mài).
