ST-39 Lower Great Hollow

下巨虚 〔下巨虛〕xià jù xū

Alternate names: 巨虚下廉 jù xū xià lián, Lower Ridge of Great Hollow; 下廉 xià lián, Lower Ridge

Channel: ST, Foot Yáng Brightness (yáng míng) Stomach Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the anterior aspect of the lower leg, 9 cùn inferior to ST-35 (dú bí), about one fingerbreadth lateral to the crest of the tibia.

Classic location: One cùn below Ribbon Opening (ST-38), in the depression between the sinew and bone. (Yī Zōng Jīn Jiàn)

Local anatomy: The anterior tibial artery and vein. Branches of the superficial peroneal nerve and the deep peroneal nerve.

Action: Clears heat and disinhibits dampness; clears the bowels and transforms stasis.

Modern indications: Smaller abdominal pain; diarrhea; dysentery; lumbar pain; mammary welling-abscess (rǔ yōng); wilting-impediment (wěi bì) of the lower limbs; lumbar pain stretching into the testicles.

Classic indications: Stomach heat; abdominal pain; diarrhea and dysentery; mania and withdrawal; swelling and pain in the shin.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 7‒15 cones; pole 5‒20 min.

Point groups: Lower uniting point (xià hé xué) of the small intestine.
