M-HN-9 Tài Yáng

太阳 〔太陽〕 tài yáng

Channel: Nonchannel point

Modern location: An acupoint located in the depression on the temple 1 cùn posterior to a point midway between the lateral end of the eyebrow and the outer canthus.

Classical location: In the depression behind the eyebrow, at the purple vein of the temple. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The venous plexus in the temporalis fascia, the zygomaticoorbital and deep temporal arteries and veins. The auriculotemporal and facial nerves; deeper, the zygomaticotemporal nerve.

Action: Courses wind and dissipates heat; clears the head and brightens the eyes.

Modern indications: Headache; deviated eyes and mouth; trigeminal neuralgia; atrophy of the optic nerve; retinal bleeding; dry eyes; pain, redness and swelling of the eyes.

Classical indications: Hemilateral headache; dizziness; toothache; facial paralysis.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.4 cùn perpendicular or 0.5‒2.0 cùn transverse insertion; bleed with three‒edged needle.

Needle sensation: Localized aching and distension.
