GV-9 Extremity of Yáng

至阳 〔至陽〕 zhì yáng

Alternate names: 肺底 fèi dǐ, Bottom of the Lung

Channel: GV, governing () vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, inferior to the spinous process of the seventh thoracic vertebra.

Classical location: Below the seventh vertebra. From The Golden Mirror of Medicine (医宗金鑑 yī zōng jīn jiàn)

Local anatomy: The posterior branch of the seventh intercostal artery. The medial branch of the posterior ramus of the seventh thoracic nerve.

Action: Rectifies qì and loosens the chest; clears heat and disinhibits dampness; frees the channels and quickens the network vessels.

Modern indications: Jaundice; distension and fullness in the chest and rib-side; cough; panting; back pain; stiffness of the spinal column.

Classical indications: Stomach cold; rumbling intestines; fatigued limbs; heat effusion with aversion to cold; aching in the lower legs; scantness of breath with difficulty in speaking; propping fullness in the chest and rib-side; marked emaciation.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒0.6 cùn sideways and upward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Needle sensation: Twinge and distension extending laterally downward, or towards the front of the chest.
