GB-18 Spirit Support

承灵 〔承靈〕 chéng líng

Channel: GB, foot lesser yáng (shào yáng) gallbladder channel; shared point on the yáng linking (yáng wéi) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the superolateral aspect of the head, 5.0 cùn within the anterior hairline on the line connecting GB-15 (tóu lín qí) and GB-20 (fēng chí).

Classical location: One cùn and five fēn behind Upright provisioning (GB-17). From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The branches of the occipital artery and vein. The branch of the great occipital nerve.

Action: Clears the gallbladder and drains heat; diffuses the lung and frees the orifices.

Modern indications: Headache; dizziness; nasal congestion; sniveling nose; nosebleed.

Classical indications: Brain wind headache; heat effusion with aversion to cold; sniveling and nosebleed; nasal congestion; dizziness; eye pain.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn backward transverse insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5‒15 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the gallbladder channel and yáng linking vessel (yáng wéi mài).
