GB-13 Root Spirit
本神 〔本神〕běn shén
Alternate names: 肋 lèi liáo, Rib Bone-Hole
Channel: GB, Foot Lesser Yáng (shào yáng) Gallbladder Channel
Modern location: An acupoint located on the superolateral aspect of the head, 0.5 cùn within the anterior hairline, one third of the distance from ST-8 to the midline (i.e., GV-24).
Classic location: One cùn and five fēn to the side of Deviating Turn (BL-4), directly above the ears, four fēn within the hairline. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)
Local anatomy: The frontal branches of the superficial temporal artery and vein, the lateral branches of the frontal artery and vein. The lateral branch of the frontal nerve.
Action: Clears and drains the liver and gallbladder; calms the liver and extinguishes wind; settles epilepsy and quiets the spirit.
Modern indications: Headache; dizzy vision; epilepsy; child fright wind.
Classic indications: Stiff nape and nape; rib-side pain; child fright epilepsy (jīng xián); hemilateral wind.
Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn backward transverse insertion. Moxa: 3‒5 cones; pole 5‒15 min.
Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the gallbladder channel and yáng linking vessel (yáng wéi mài).
