LI-12 Elbow Bone-Hole

肘髎 〔肘髎〕zhǒu liáo

Alternate names: 肘尖 zhǒu jiān, Tip of the Elbow

Channel: LI, Hand Yáng Brightness (yáng míng) Large Intestine Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the upper arm, about 1.5 cùn directly superior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, on the anterior edge of the lateral head of the triceps brachii muscle.

Classic location: In the depression at the outer corner of the large elbow bone. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)

Local anatomy: The radial collateral artery and vein. The posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve; deeper, on the medial side, the radial nerve.

Action: Courses the channels and quickens the network vessels; disinhibits the joints.

Modern indications: Pain, hypertonicity, and numbness and tingling of the elbow and arm.

Classic indications: Wind impediment (fēng bì) of the elbow.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.3‒0.5 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Needle sensation: Localized twinge and distension.
