KI-21 Dark Gate

幽门 〔幽門〕 yōu mén

Alternate names: 上门 shàng mén, Upper Gate

Channel: KI, foot lesser yīn (shào yīn) kidney channel; shared point on the thoroughfare (chōng) vessel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper abdomen, 6 cùn superior to the umbilicus and 0.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: In a depression one cùn and five fēn either side of Great Tower Gate (CV-14). From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Branches of the superior epigastric artery and vein. The 7th intercostal nerve.

Action: Courses the liver and rectifies qì; fortifies the spleen and harmonizes the stomach; clears abdominal heat.

Modern indications: Abdominal pain; abdominal distension; retching and vomiting; diarrhea.

Classical indications: Pain in the chest referring to the back and lumbus; glomus and distension below the heart; nontransformation of grain and water (undigested food in the stool); abdominal urgency; painful red eyes spreading from the inner canthus.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 5 cones; pole 20‒30 min.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the kidney channel and thoroughfare vessel.
