BL-59 Instep Yáng

跗阳 〔跗陽〕fū yáng

Alternate names: 付阳 fù yáng, Give Yang; 附阳 fù yáng, Yang Attachment; 阳矫 yáng jiǎo, Yang Correction

Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lateral aspect of the lower leg, 3 cùn superior to the tip of the lateral malleolus, midway between the Achilles tendon (t. calcaneus) and the posterior edge of the fibula.

Classic location: Below Taking Flight (BL-58), between the sinew and bone, three cùn above the outer anklebone. (Yī Zōng Jīn Jiàn)

Local anatomy: The small saphenous vein; deeper, the terminal branch of the peroneal artery. The sural nerve.

Action: Dispels greater yáng (tài yáng) channel evils; disperses wind-damp in the channels and network vessels.

Modern indications: Headache; lumbosacral pain; wilting-impediment (wěi bì) of the lower limbs; painful swelling of the external malleolus; paralysis.

Classic indications: Dizziness; nasal congestion with clear runny snivel; pain and swelling of the lower limbs.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒20 min.

Point groups: Cleft point (xī xué) of the yáng springing vessel (yáng qiāo mài).
