BL-46 Diaphragm Pass

膈关 〔膈關〕 gé guān

Alternate names: BL-41

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the seventh thoracic vertebra, 3 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: In the depression three cùn either side of the spine, below the seventh vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture with shoulders spread. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein. Medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 6th and 7th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches.

Action: Fortifies the spleen and disinhibits dampness; harmonizes the stomach and abducts stagnation; soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels.

Modern indications: Oppression in the chest; retching and vomiting; belching; painful stiffness of the spinal column.

Classical indications: Blood disorders; yellow urine; body pain.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5 cùn downward oblique insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 5‒20 min.
