BL-44 Spirit Hall
神堂 〔神堂〕shén táng
Alternate names: BL-39
Channel: BL, Foot Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Bladder Channel
Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra, 3 cùn lateral to the midline.
Classic location: In the depression three cùn either side of the spine, below the fifth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)
Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein, the descending branch of the transverse cervical artery. Medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 4th and 5th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches and the dorsal scapular nerve.
Action: Loosens the chest and rectifies qì; suppresses cough and stabilizes panting; soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels.
Modern indications: Panting; cough; oppression in the chest; painful stiffness of the back.
Classic indications: Fullness in the chest and abdomen.
Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5 cùn oblique insertion toward corner of the shoulder blade. Moxa: 7‒15 cones; pole 5‒10 min.
