BL-44 Spirit Hall

神堂 〔神堂〕 shén táng

Alternate names: BL-39

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the fifth thoracic vertebra, 3 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: In the depression three cùn either side of the spine, below the fifth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the intercostal artery and vein, the descending branch of the transverse cervical artery. Medial cutaneous branches of the posterior rami of the 4th and 5th thoracic nerves; deeper, their lateral branches and the dorsal scapular nerve.

Action: Loosens the chest and rectifies qì; suppresses cough and stabilizes panting; soothes the sinews and quickens the network vessels.

Modern indications: Panting; cough; oppression in the chest; painful stiffness of the back.

Classical indications: Fullness in the chest and abdomen.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5 cùn oblique insertion toward corner of the shoulder blade. Moxa: 7‒15 cones; pole 5‒10 min.
