BL-34 Lower Bone-Hole

下髎 〔下髎〕 xià liáo

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the sacrum, in the fourth sacral foramen.

Classical location: In the fourth opening, in the depression on either side of the spine. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Branches of the inferior gluteal artery and vein. The course of the posterior ramus of the 4th sacral nerve.

Action: Disinhibits the stools and urine; frees the channels and relieves pain.

Modern indications: Abdominal pain; constipation; inhibited urination; vaginal discharge; lumbar pain.

Classical indications: Rumbling intestines; diarrhea; bloody stool; vaginal discharge; cold mounting (hán shàn); pain and itching in the genitals.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 5‒7 cones; pole 20‒30 min.
