BL-33 Central Bone-Hole

中髎 〔中髎〕 zhōng liáo

Alternate names: 中空 zhōng kōng, Central Hole

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the sacrum, in the third sacral foramen.

Classical location: In the third opening, in the depression on either side of the spine. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the lateral sacral artery and vein. The course of the posterior ramus of the 3rd sacral nerve.

Action: Frees the channels and quickens the blood; disperses cold and relieves pain; regulates the menses and checks vaginal discharge.

Modern indications: Constipation; diarrhea; menstrual irregularities; vaginal discharge; lumbar pain.

Classical indications: Red and white vaginal discharge; strangury-turbidity (lìn zhuó); abdominal distension and diarrhea; food diarrhea; the five taxations and the damage by the seven affects.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.7‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 20‒30 min.
