BL-31 Upper Bone-Hole

上髎 〔上髎〕 shàng liáo

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the sacrum, in the first sacral foramen.

Classical location: In the first opening one cùn below the lumbar bone, in the depression either side of the spine. From The Systematic Classic of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸甲乙经 zhēn jiǔ jiǎ yǐ jīng)

Local anatomy: Posterior branches of the lateral sacral artery and vein. The site where the posterior ramus of the 1st sacral nerve passes.

Action: Frees the channels and quickens the network vessels; supplements the lower burner; strengthens the lumbus.

Modern indications: Inhibited defecation and urination; menstrual irregularities; vaginal discharge; yīn protrusion (prolapse of the uterus); seminal emission; impotence; lumbar pain.

Classical indications: Genital itch; red and white vaginal discharge; strangury-turbidity (lìn zhuó); retching counterflow; nosebleed; infertility; malarial disease heat effusion with aversion to cold.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.7‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 20‒30 min.

Needle sensation: Distension and numbness spreading down towards the legs.
