BL-24 Sea-of-Qì Transport

气海俞 〔氣海俞〕 qì hǎi shù

Channel: BL, foot greater yáng (tài yáng) bladder channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the lower back, level with the inferior border of the spinous process of the third lumbar vertebra, 1.5 cùn lateral to the midline.

Classical location: One cùn and five fēn either side of the spine, below the fifteenth vertebra. The point is found in straight sitting posture. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The posterior rami of the 3rd lumbar artery and vein. The lateral cutaneous branch of the posterior ramus of the 2nd lumbar nerve.

Action: Regulates and supplements qì and blood; strengthens the lumbus and knees.

Modern indications: Rumbling intestines; abdominal distension; anal fistula; lumbar pain.

Classical indications: Hemorrhoids and fistulas.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3‒7 cones; pole 10‒20 min.

Point name meaning:

BL-24 is located directly opposite Sea of Qì (CV-6), and is named Sea-of-Qì Transport (qì hǎi shù) because of its location and for reasons that are similar to those that account for CV-6 being named Sea of Qì (see CV-6). See acupoint names: origins, meanings, and translations.
