LI-3 Third Space

三间 〔三間〕 sān jiān

Alternate names: 少谷 shào gǔ, Lesser Valley; 小谷 xiǎo gǔ, Small Valley

Channel: LI, hand yáng brightness (yáng míng) large intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the radial aspect of the hand, just proximal to the head of the second metacarpal bone.

Classical location: On the inner side of the index finger, in the depression behind the base joint. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The dorsal venous network of the hand and the branch of the 1st dorsal metacarpal artery. The superficial ramus of the radial nerve.

Action: Discharges evil heat; disinhibits the throat; regulates bowel qì.

Modern indications: Eye pain; toothache; painful swollen throat; generalized heat effusion; abdominal fullness; redness and swelling of the fingers and backs of the hands.

Classical indications: Acute eye pain; aching among the lower teeth; throat impediment (hóu bì); heat effusion with aversion to cold; abdominal fullness and rumbling intestines; shoulder pain; dryness of the mouth and lips; generalized heat effusion; panting; fecal stoppage.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒10 min.

Point groups: Stream (shù) (wood) point.
