SI-18 Cheek Bone-Hole

颧髎 〔顴髎〕 quán liáo

Alternate names: 兑骨 duì gǔ, Mouth Bone; 权髎 quán liáo, Influential Bone-Hole; 椎髎 zhuī liáo, Hammer Bone-Hole

Channel: SI, hand greater yáng (tài yáng) small intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the face, straight below the outer canthus of the eye, in the depression inferior to the maxillary portion of the zygomatic arch.

Classical location: In the depression below the protuberance of the cheek bone. From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: Branches of the transverse facial artery and vein. The facial and infraorbital nerves.

Action: Relieves pain and tetany.

Modern indications: Deviated eyes and mouth; twitching of the eyelids; toothache; yellowing of the eyes.

Classical indications: Pain and swelling of the cheek.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.2‒0.3 cùn oblique or perpendicular insertion.

Warning: Moxa contraindicated.

Point groups: Intersection point (jiāo huì xué) of the small intestine and triple burner channels.
