SI-11 Celestial Gathering
天宗 〔天宗〕tiān zōng
Channel: SI, Hand Greater Yáng (tài yáng) Small Intestine Channel
Modern location: An acupoint located on the upper back, in the infraspinous fossa, midway between the medial and lateral borders of the scapula and one third of the distance from the scapular spine to the inferior angle of the scapula.
Classic location: Behind Grasping the Wind (SI-12), in the depression of the shoulder blade. (Zhēn Jiǔ Dà Chéng)
Local anatomy: The muscular branches of the circumflex scapular artery and vein. The suprascapular nerve.
Action: Resolves greater yáng (tài yáng) channel evils; diffuses qì stagnation in the chest and rib-side.
Modern indications: Pain in the shoulder and scapula;
Classic indications: Propping fullness in the chest and rib-side;
Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn oblique or perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒20 min.
Needle sensation: Distension and numbness, sometimes spreading over the shoulder.
