SI-9 True Shoulder

肩贞 〔肩貞〕 jiān zhēn

Channel: SI, hand greater yáng (tài yáng) small intestine channel

Modern location: An acupoint located on the posterior aspect of the upper arm, 1 cùn directly superior to the end of the posterior axillary fold.

Classical location: Between the two bones below the curve of the shoulder blade, in the depression behind Shoulder Bone (LI-15). From The Great Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion (针灸大成 zhēn jiǔ dà chéng)

Local anatomy: The circumflex scapular artery and vein. Branch of the axillary nerve; deeper in the superior aspect, the radial nerve.

Action: Courses wind and quickens the network vessels; disperses binds and relieves pain.

Modern indications: Shoulder pain; arm pain; scrofula; tinnitus.

Classical indications: Cold damage heat effusion with aversion to cold; swelling of the submandibular region; tinnitus and deafness; pain in the supraclavicular fossa; toothache.

Needle stimulus: Needling: 0.5‒1.0 cùn perpendicular insertion. Moxa: 3 cones; pole 5‒20 min.
